The Private Investigator
The Private Investigator knows where to look. His job - and his art - is to provide information. In an increasingly complex society where few people are aware of the many sources and techniques necessary to obtain inconspicuous data, a specialist must be consulted. Whether the request is to verify an employment history, locate a missing person, or trace the cause of an inventory shortage, the investigator must know exactly what to do. He evaluates the situation, chooses an appropriate procedure and goes to work.
The inquiry may be general, involving telephone and personal interviews and perusal of official records, or it may be more in-depth, requiring a discreet surveillance or undercover operation. Facts are gathered and weighed against the client's needs. Have they been satisfied, or is further attention needed? Have new questions been raised, suggesting a more tailored approach?
Media portrayals aside, the Private Investigator's work becomes routine once he has, through experience, mastered these fundamental techniques. Although people's motives are always interesting to the true investigator, intrigues are rare. Organization and initiative are perhaps the most vital attributes. Intelligence, imagination and determination, coupled with poise and affability will open more doors than belligerence and guile. I have also long believed that good things come from hard work.
At one point, during my undergraduate days, I began to doubt the value of my efforts. A Latin phrase I happened upon encouraged me: "Ad astra, per aspera"--"To the stars by difficult ways." These words were compelling to the harried and impoverished student; my striving would not be in vain. This is still my motto and now the cornerstone of my agency. Problems may arise, but diligence and ingenuity will overcome any obstacle en route to the stars.
